On the night of 26th November 1703, Britain was hit by the most destructive storm in 500 years.

10,000 people lost their lives, the Royal Navy lost a fifth of its ships, windmills turned so fast that they caught fire and a cow was tossed up into the branches of a tree.

The Queen had to shelter as parts of the royal palace collapsed.

Thousands of sailors wrecked on the Goodwin Sands perished as the waters rose.

Hear about the bravery of the people of Deal in Kent who braved the Great Storm of 1703 by rowing out to rescue some of the sailors stranded on the Goodwin Sands.

Many eye witness accounts of both the Great Storm and it's aftermath were recorded by Daniel Defoe the author of Robinson Crusoe in his book "The Storm".
I draw some of my story from The Storm by Daniel Defoe.

This is the story of The Great Storm of 1703

My name is Chris Green ("The History Chap") and I am on a mission to share the amazing history of Britain so that we can appreciate where we have come from and why we are here.

History should not be stuffy or a long list of dates or kings & queens.
So rather than lectures or Youtube animations, I tell stories that bring the past to life.

My aim is to be chat as if I were having a coffee or meal with you. Jean in Maryland, USA recently wrote: "Chris, is the history teacher I wish I had at school!"

Just for the record, I do have a history degree and continue to have a passion for the subject I studied.
