The Story of How the Internet Was Born

Follow
Interesting Engineering

The history of the internet started with the Sputnik fear. The most successful scientists and engineers in the U.S. were designing nuclear weapons, and they had very serious space programs. They thought they had the most power. However, the Soviet Union became the one who launched the first satellite into orbit. It felt like a nuclear bomb on the head in the U.S. because they actually began to think that the Soviet Union was up to something big. So they needed to create something bigger in order to regain technological superiority.
Not the kind of "bigger" like huge weapons.
The kind of "bigger" like the internet.
The U.S. federal government formed new agencies like NASA and the Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency, aka ARPA, to discover space and develop technologies like space weapons, rocket ships, and computers.
Because the government was afraid of the Soviet Union attacking their communication system, they wanted to develop an alternative network line. Hence the internet was born.
