The Dark Web Dilemma | Eric Jardine | TEDxYYC

The Internet is still very young, and like most new technologies, we are still grappling with the implications. As more of our daily lives are spent online, what role does privacy play in this new digital ecosystem? Too much enables people to behave badly, yet too little allows governments and corporations broad control and influence over our lives. We should all recall the story of Goldilocks and ask ourselves: what level of privacy is just right? Have you ever heard about the Dark Web? How much do you know about it? What about cybercrime, security technologies, and Internet governance? As an assistant professor of political science at Virginia Tech, and a fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), Eric Jardine’s research covers these and more. The CIGI is a Canadian think tank focusing on governance challenges in the 21st century.
Imagine how much we truly don’t understand about the digital landscape we live in, and how much there is to learn. Jardine’s work explores the challenges our new digital lives have brought to public policy, as well as uses and abuses of the Dark Web and trends in cybercrime. It considers the dilemmas created for public policy governing both anonymitygranting technologies and encryption, as well as channels by which new security technologies can actually make us less safe. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
