1979 DOWNEASTER 38 Sailing Yacht + History, Facts and Tour with Siren | Down East Yachts of CA Ep.38

This week on The Siren's Log, I'll be taking you through a Downeaster 38, built by Down East Yachts in Santa Ana, California.

The Downeast 38 is a cutter rig has a total length of 41.75’ with the bowsprit, and a beam of 11.81 feet. With a displacement of 19,500 lbs, she’s a stout, heavy vessel for her size, designed to cross oceans at a cruising speed of over 7 knots. Her draft is just under 5’ and she has a fiberglass hull.

The design was conceived by Bob Poole, founder of Down East Yachts, and designed by Henry Morschladt. The company began building boats in 1974 in Santa Ana, California, during the height of the sailing boom. Over 230 were built between 1974 and 1981, alongside several other Downeaster models.

Bob Poole was a boat builder and had previously been an executive for Columbia Yachts, and Morschladt was the name behind the famed Pacific Seacraft brand. In Poole’s own words, Pool wanted to build, “a classic cruising yacht utilizing modern materials and technology where they belong, while retaining the traditional features of the fine early cruising yachts of Down East.” That’s precisely what he did.

With around 230 of the Downeaster 38’s built, and hundreds more between the 32, the 41 and the 45, Bob Poole passed away in 1978, and the company carried on for another several years, even finishing a batch of Westsails for the failing Westsail Corporation.

The company closed its doors completely in 1983 and the tools and molds were sold to Newport Offshore Yachts.
