The bunya pine (Araucaria bidwillii) is an Australian tree with some amazing large cones

LA County Arboretum & Botanic Garden

Bunya pines (Araucaria bidwillii) are native to the southeastern part, and far north of Queensland, Australia. The bunya that dropped this cone has been in our collection since the 1950’s. It can produce a large quantity of cones about every three years, each weighing about 15 pounds. We currently have five other trees that have been grown from cones dropped by our original bunya.

We had hoped to have a large number of seeds in this large cone, but only about 12 were viable, and 12 were immature or inviable.

Since this is an offyear for cone production, there may not have been enough male cones to provide sufficient pollen.
