In general, Subway is a resounding success story. It went from a single Connecticut location at its founding in 1965 to more than 40,000 by 2010. That kind of growth is nearly unparalleled in the world of restaurants.

Yet over the last decade or so, the chain has taken some serious hits. It seems to have been plagued by one scandal after another, and customer interest seems to be waning. While competitors grow substantially, Subway's share of the sandwich market has declined. Its recent menu offerings haven't all been winners, either.
