The BEST Ways to Study for the CFA Exams (Based on Data)

Straight Talks - AJ Srmek

We are going to look at the statistical BEST ways to study for the CFA exams. There has always been some debate around what the most effective ways to study for the CFA exams really are. Using the responses to the survey on the CFA sub reddit, we can look at how thousands of candidates studied, and if they passed the exam or not. How many hours they put in, what resources they used, and how many mock exams they took are all examples of factors that can make a big difference in a candidates chance of passing an exam. I’ve talked in the past videos about what I think are the most effective ways to study, Mark Meldrum has made videos about how to adjust your study routine if you fail any of the exams, and I’ve made further videos about how I think some of his points are wrong and, instead other factors are more critical to a candidates ability to pass. But the reality is that we all learn a bit differently. So instead of relying on personal opinion, lets looks at the data, on the best ways to study for, and pass a CFA exam.

We will get into specific factors in a minute, but there are a couple points that need to be made about our dataset. The most recent survey conducted on the r/CFA subreddit had 2,373 responses. While this number of responses may be enough to yield statistically significant results based on the population, the data isn’t perfect. The biggest bias is that 89% of survey respondents passed the exam, while only about 44% of the population passed the exam. But this bias might not be such a bad thing for our conversation here, since we are hoping to learn more about candidates who passed, and how they did it. So in some ways, having passbiased results might actually be more helpful. Also note that these were all Level 1 candidates, and about 50% of them were from North American which isn’t quite the case when we look at the population. All of that being said, if you haven’t read through these survey results before, they are quite interesting. So here is what the results say about how to study, to pass the CFA exams.
