The Attainable Garden Project. Episode 3. Building the Garden Bed.

Follow
The Heirloom Farmer

In this garden project I share exactly what to do each week and together we will grow a beautiful 4x8 garden packed with food! This week we are building the garden bed!

Be sure to watch episodes 1 and episode 2 first.

This week you will need:

Brown cardboard or newspaper. You will need enough to cover the 4x8ft section with 1 layer of cardboard or 45 layers of newspaper. If you do not have any on hand, ask neighbors or post on social media, many people are more than happy to give away cardboard and paper. (Free)

Compost. You will need enough compost to cover the 4x8 space at least 4in thick. This is approximately 1/2 yard of compost (this is the most common measurement for bulk compost) or about 20 5gallon buckets, or about 13 cubic feet.

You want to find a well composted mix (not fresh manure). If you do not have any, that’s okay. There are many local options including mushroom compost offered at our farm. (Approximately $50)

You can usually get the best price if you are able to haul a 1/2 yard in a pickup truck. However, if you do not have access to a pickup truck you can fill buckets, or purchase bags. Bags at hardware stores or garden centers are often sold by the cubic foot, so you will need about 13 bags if they are each 1 cubic foot.

I highly recommend organic compost that is free of herbicides and pesticides. If you have additional questions about finding, hauling or applying compost, please let me know.

One bale of straw or hay. Organic and free of seeds is preferred. (Approximately $8) Or leaves! (Free)

A shovel and rake can be helpful.

I also recommend having access to water so you can wet down the layers as you go.
