Threepoint lighting is a classic portrait lighting setup for both stills and video work. As the name suggests, you’ll need three lights! After experimenting, you'll learn that there are plenty of ways to use 3point lighting.

Photographer Gavin Hoey introduces a stepbystep guide for this essential lighting technique. First, he starts with a oneflash portrait in his small home studio. Once that is set, Gavin adds a hair light to create a rim light on one side of his model. Finally, he adds a third light to complete the threelight portrait.

As Gavin demonstrates, the third light can be placed either behind your subject as a background light. However, if you’re after a soft, evenly lit portrait technique, place the third light in front of your subject.
