Do you want help with that tricky hairy vs. downy woodpecker ID? Redheaded woodpecker vs. redbellied woodpecker? We'll cover how to identify the 7 woodpeckers seen in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Northern Virginia. Other birds included are the yellowbellied sapsucker, pileated woodpecker and northern flicker. We'll take a closer look at the range map of the yellowshafted northern flicker.

The 7: Downy woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens), hairy woodpecker (Dryobates villosus), pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus), yellowbellied sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius), redheaded woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus), redbellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) and the yellowshafted northern flicker subspecies group with the (2) subspecies: the northern yellowshafted flicker (Colaptes auratus luteus (inc. borealis)) and southeastern yellowshafted flicker (Colaptes auratus auratus).

Note the redcockaded woodpecker does show up in the very southern parts of Virginia but is not including in the DMV area. (At least in my opinion!)
