Tempo is a foundational music concept. The Animal Metronome, included in The Music Set, makes tempo relatable by using animals to help your child understand the differences between speeds.

Arts Education Consultant Joy Marilie Jackson @joymarilieccc shares a fun activity to help your child learn about tempo:

Start by asking your child to identify each animal, and ask them whether they think that animal moves fast or slow.

Set the metronome to a slow tempo, like the snail or koala, and have your child pat along to the sound of the click.

Ask them to turn the dial and describe what they notice is happening, “the sound of the click is getting faster!”

Try singing familiar songs at different tempos, and let your child turn the dial to choose the tempo they want to try.
