Teaching Gidget the Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppy toTrade for a Bone: Prevent Resource Guarding in Dogs

This is a description of helping prevent resource guarding in Gidget. I noticed early signs of avoidance when she picked up the bone and moved away from me when I approached. In order to prevent this escape/avoidance escalating (e.g. growling, snapping, biting), I chose to teach her that my approach was a good thing and that she didn't need to escape with her precious resource. If you have a dog that has already escalated to freezing, growling, snapping or biting when approached around an object, please seek professional assistance so that training remains safe for both you and your dog.
