Another installment of the Physio Taping series where I show you how I tape the Acromioclavicular (AC) joint to help settle it down after acute sprain or injury, inflammation, ligament rupture or painful joint arthritis and weightlifter's shoulder.

The key is to offload the arm / shoulder by anchoring the tape down at the deltoid insertion and pulling tape in 3 different directions, lifting the arm up in the direction of the scapula. The anchoring onto the skin over the scapula will act as the top anchor to help hold the arm up and therefore reduce the downward / gravity load of the arm on the AC joint. Then a posterior and inferior load onto the clavicle will help stabilise and support the joint, helping it stay in a better position and act as ligament 'reinforcement'.

I find this works really well in the acute stages of injury to help the patient deal with pain, and enable them to do their stability exercises more often and hence promote a faster recovery.
