On swing trades, determining one’s own favorable reward/risk ratio allows a trader to hopefully minimize losses and avoid trades that don't meet their minimum criteria. If someone has a 2:1 reward risk ratio that means for every $1 they risk they expect $2 return. After some experimenting in a paper trading account, one can start to determine what ratio they might feel comfortable with. We also discussed changing your target and stop if the calculated reward/risk ratio doesn't meet your rules.
