What initiatives could help the cocoa industry in third world countries? How can first world countries assist? Joke has almost 20 years of experience in working in sustainable agriculture in land use as well
as supply/value chains. She has worked for a variety of certification systems such as Fairtrade,
Forest Stewardship Council, and Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil, and spent a good ten
years at Rainforest Alliance working on tropical commodities such as coffee, cocoa, tea, fruits,
and spices. She has experience on the buy/brand side and field experience on the producer
side, both with smallholders and large plantations. She is currently working to build the Open
Chain at Tony's Chocolonely, where cocoa brands are collaborating for maximum positive
impact with their cocoa supply chains.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in international studies and Sustainable Development from Johns
Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. She is Belgian and lives in Amsterdam, NL She is a native
Dutch and English speaker, speaks fluent French, and has a working knowledge of Spanish and
