How to change a Subaru internal tank fuel filter that many new Subaru's have including the Outback, Crosstrek, Impreza, and Legacy. The process will be similar to this which is being replaced on my 4th Gen 2015 Subaru Forester 2.5i nonturbo.    / @mtsubfly

In my past, I have seen dirty fuel filters cause rough running engines, and even led to misdiagnosed engine lights. So I am surprised our Forester has run just over 100k miles with no issues. Subaru recommends replacing it every 72k miles, I will be going another 100k before doing it again unless I have fuel pump issues by then.

The process may seem daunting, but is not that difficult, it mainly requires patience. If you are ok spending more money you could pay the extra money and buy an entire pump and filter assembly, but I see no reason for that.
