1. Various students staying in tents listen to speakers talking about Gaza in front of UC Berkeley's Sproul Hall
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Malak Afaneh, UC Berkeley Student & Protest Organizer:
"Hands off our students. Hands off Palestine. Speaking for myself, I was the student that UC Berkeley law professor Katherine Fisk assaulted at a school sponsored, university funded dinner. Many other students have experienced repression, surveillance, threats of disciplinary and criminal proceedings, and have been physically assaulted and verbally accosted. It's time to stop this repression."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Malak Afaneh, UC Berkeley Student & Protest Organizer:
"Conflating antiSemitism with antiZionism is very harmful because it erodes the very real violence of antiSemitism. It's important to also note that the majority of our people here today that are in the encampments do identify as antiZionist Jewish students. In fact, yesterday JVP, Jewish Voices for Peace, held a seder and a Shabbat, honoring the first day of Passover. And so that speaks a lot to the fact that they felt that the best way to observe and practice in their religious identity was to stand on the right side of justice against the genocide."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Malak Afaneh, UC Berkeley Student & Protest Organizer:
"Quite frankly, we're going to be here until we achieve divestment. We're willing to risk suspension. We're willing to risk expulsion. We're willing to risk arrest. And so we have a full working team of medics, legal observers, hotlines, community members, food support, ready to stand with us. What I anticipate, because the university has not reached out to us, the administration has not reached out, what I anticipate is what happened at Columbia, where they gave them a 24hour notice of the charges, the student conduct charges they would receive. After that, they called in NYPD. I expect the same to happen here where the school emails us and or sends a representative to the encampments directly, and if not, they'll send campus PD and Berkeley PD. Like I said though, we're willing to risk anything to stand here until we achieve our demands for divestment."

STORYLINE:
Some students at UC Berkeley are studying for finals in tents, as they call for the university to divest from Israel due to the Gaza conflict.

More than 30 tents popped up outside Sproul Hall on campus at what's being called a "Gaza solidarity encampment."

In a released statement, UC Berkeley wrote: "We will take the steps necessary to ensure the protest does not disrupt the university's operations. There are no plans to change the university's investment policies and practices."

So far there have been no reports of violence or vandalism at the Berkeley encampment.

But five hours north, California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, announced that its campus will be closed through Wednesday after demonstrators occupied a building Monday night.

Classes were to be conducted remotely, the school said on its website.
