The argument comes from Fokine, who is also responsible for the choreography. This plot is inspired by an oriental tale; it's essentially the story of Prince Ivan, who captures the Firebird and, in return for its freedom, asks for one of its feathers. He later falls in love with one of the enchanted princesses in the garden of Kastcheï, the giant with green fingers. He gets captured, but the Firebird comes to his rescue. Ivan seizes Kastcheï's soul, preserved like an egg in a box. The giant dies, the palace collapses, and Ivan escapes with the princess. The arrangement made by Stravinsky in 1919 aimed to allow a smaller ensemble to perform this work.

"The Firebird" is the work that now appears inseparable from the rising fame of the Ballets Russes and Stravinsky. The ballet premiered at the Paris Opera on June 25, 1910, and the musical world was particularly attentive, although the subsequent ballets, "Petrouchka" and "The Rite of Spring," each surpassed, as they say, all the predictions of the most observant critics! These three works, likened to three leaps of dancers, "historically" established Stravinsky's reputation and importance in 20thcentury music. While "The Rite of Spring" is undoubtedly the most astonishing leap of the three, there's no denying that, for a debut, "The Firebird" was a true masterstroke. While the influence of RimskyKorsakov, especially "The Golden Cockerel," is apparent, this work asserts an originality that becomes more striking with hindsight. It's impossible not to recognize the youthful essence of a musical genius; I believe that this youth, contrary to what has often been said, is the most fascinating aspect of this score.

Orchestral mastery is affirmed with a vigor and freshness that I can only compare to Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique" (although I know that Stravinsky didn't particularly like Berlioz...). I would gladly say that the modernity of 19thcentury orchestration revealed itself in the "Symphonie Fantastique," just as it did in "The Firebird." An innate virtuosity is evident, common to both composers and indicative of their poetic genius.
