STRANGER THINGS IN FLORIDA: BOK TOWER

TheBoatBoy

Florida is one of the most interesting places in America. Just when you think you've seen something really unusual, you stumble into something even more unusual. Bok Tower is inspired by musical towers in Holland. Mr. Bok had a lot of money. One day he woke up and thought, "Let's go build a musical tower like the one I liked as a boy in my old country." And he built it. In this video you will discover the tower and hear some of its tunes, courtesy of Mr. Bok and all of the volunteers and others who work hard to keep the whole place spic and span perfect.

Box Tower Gardens is about a hours drive south of Disney area in Orlando. The gardens are amazing, very special. Florida is super flat. Miami is only 6 feet above sea level. Orlando is way up there in 'the thin air' at 82 feet above sea level. Box Tower is built on 'Iron Mountain', which is 295 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest points in all of Florida. The highest point in the state is 345 feet above sea level. How you can call a 295 hill a mountain is beyond me. Putting that aside, there is a view from the base of Box Tower which you will see in the video. The garden estate is surrounded by orange groves. Think where Tropicana comes from.

Watch my other video to see the exterior of Mr. Box's historical vacation property (about a 100 years old).

The gardens were designed by Frederick law Olmstead. I'd never heard of the guy before. He's no slouch. This brilliant man designed NYC's Central Park, the grounds of the US capital (White House, National Mall and Jefferson Memorial), the grounds at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville North Caroline, and apparently, Bok Tower Gardens. I've had the pleasure of visiting all of these places noted directly above, which makes me a Frederick Law Olmstead groupie. Who would have thought.
