The Western Isles Council is based in Stornoway, the major town on the Isle of Lewis. The town has a population of little over 6,000 people, accounting for almost a third of the island's entire population. Traditional industries such as fishing, Harris Tweed, and farming coexist with more recent influences such as tourism, the oil industry, and commerce, all of which have been influenced by the digital revolution and communications.

Due to its protected location, Stornoway is the island's major port, with the ferry to Ullapool a frequent visitor. The sheltered harbour is the reason for the town's existence, and it was named "Steering Bay" by the visiting Vikings, which became Stornoway when phonetically translated.

The town boasts a variety of amenities, including a big secondary school (Nicholson Institute) and technical college, as well as sporting facilities, including a brand new sports facility. With its 25meter pool, climbing walls, fitness centre, and soft play area, the complex would be the envy of most tiny mainland communities.

A golf course, Astro Turf field, GoKarting, and even a paintball action area are all available in the town. During the summer, boat cruises around the area are provided, departing from the pontoons behind the Lifeboat Station. With a strong museum, art gallery, and library, cultural needs are well cared for. In the summer of 2005, An Lanntair, a brand new arts complex, opened its doors.

The Stornoway Trust has established a variety of wellmaintained forest paths with varied durations and scenic attractions in the grounds of Lews Castle.
The Gaelic language is still commonly spoken, but it is not as common in Stornoway as it is in the countryside.
