The South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has released a 48page plan to create integrated "mega landscapes" spanning vast areas of land and sea, where hunting, bioprospecting, and tourism would be used to monetize wild animals and plants for "consumptive use." The plan aims to increase areas under conservation from 20 million hectares to 34 million hectares by 2040, but the focus on the commodification of wildlife has raised serious concerns among environmental NGOs and experts.
The proposed plan, which includes expanding trophy hunting, wild meat harvesting, and the domestic trade of animal parts like ivory and rhino horn, ignores the biological realities and opportunity costs associated with these practices. Experts argue that trophy hunting removes prime males, not "surplus" males as claimed, and that the plan contradicts South Africa's reputation as a destination for sustainable wildlife tourism. Moreover, the short 14day public comment period has been criticized as insufficient for meaningful public participation.
