Steam to the Gobi Desert - English • Great Railways

Great Railways

China’s railways were the world's last great bastion of steam. New routes in a rapidly expanding network had priority for modern traction, leaving existing lines to continue with steam traction for decades. This programme takes us on a 1991 rail journey from the sole surviving standard gauge steam locomotive factory, past the Great Wall of China and through the wilds of inner Mongolia to the edge of the Gobi desert. The famous QJ 2102 is filmed on express passenger work in stunning mountain scenery with a dramatic cab ride, as well as doubleheading heavy freights on the horseshoe curves beyond Zhongwei en route to China’s Far West.
Other classic types featured are YJ 262 at Baotou steel works, plus JF 282 and SY 282 on branch line and coal mine service. A rare archive clip shows an exUSSR FD Class 2102 filmed inside the great Yangtze bridge. In all, a fascinating portrait of a vanished era.
