Anyone living in Southern Oregon or Northern California is probably also a resident of the State of Jefferson. The mythical Jefferson is the product of local lore, regional identity, and pride for its residents. It remains a symbol of an enduring ruralurban divide. Now, some are working to make it the 51st official state by moving borders between Oregon and California.
