EA’s Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (presented by Lucasfilm) is a clumsy game, but it's got some very good lipstick. And I'm not just talking about the Star Wars of it all either.

This is the Star Wars game that I wanted since… forever. I get that some of you will have fond memories of Force Unleashed, and The Force Unleashed 1 and 2 was great, but the lightsaber game I have fond memories of is actually Revenge of the Sith. For a licenced game it let me live out my Jedi power fantasy, and my sister and I would lose hours in the multiplayer duels.
So when I saw Fallen Order’s E3 Demo, I thought… hell yeah, sure. If the developer behind Titanfall and Apex Legends was getting a crack at a singleplayer Star Wars action game, I was all for it. And they’re borrowing from the Soulslike formula to boot? Well I can’t get enough of a decent Soulslike! But even though I was interested in the game, I couldn’t help but feel like Respawn were trying to please the crowd, rather than carving their own path. They’re rearing a pig and sloppily slapping some secondhand lipstick on it.
But I know I’m not alone in saying that Jedi: Fallen Order was an engaging and pleasant surprise when I finally sat down with it. It’s a solid adventure, with a fun story, addictive combat, and any of its flaws – of which there are a fair few – often get batted aside when you unwrap some more of the glossy Star Wars packaging.
