St Ignatius Church Rome

The Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola, built in Baroque style between 1626 and 1650, is a Roman Catholic titular church, of deaconry rank, dedicated to Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus.

The massive illusionistic frescoes that cover the entirety of the vaulted ceiling of the church celebrates the holiness and missionary vision of the order’s founder Ignatius Loyola. The frescoes were works of Andrea Pozzo, a Jesuit laybrother and painter who dedicated 15 years of his career to the church in the late 17th century, and are amongst the highlights of the dazzling era of the Roman Baroque.

The dark dome above the altar appears to be crisscrossed by supporting ribs, supported by columns, and with a lantern at the top letting light stream into the cupola. However, it is actually a perspectival illusion, painted onto the completely flat ceiling of the crossing!
