Spyderco Delica 4 Review (Buy K390 Now!)

Engineer’s Perspective

The delica has been around for ages and the delica 4 incarnation is pretty great. The edge geometry is well above average and the blade is thin with a great distal taper. This makes for a very high performance blade that is best complimented by a high performance steel like K390. K390 is my favorite steel as Seki heat treats it at high hardness with 17vol% vanadium carbide that comes up finer than expected and strops back well. The steel breaks down to an edge that always makes the cut even when it seems like it's ready to be touched up. Note that it does tend to hold on to a stubborn micro burr that is difficult to detect but must be removed. The FRN handles are light, and very comfortable for the thinness. There is a hotspot for my hand with the finger grooves in the handle but they can be sanded down if desired. The real weak point of the knife is lockup and action. Pretty much all Seki lockbacks come with upanddown play and it's difficult to completely remove sidetoside play without making for very stiff closing.

Overall the delica 4 gets almost everything right with the lockup and action really being where it falls short. As a knife that can get stuff done, the K390 version is unparalleled in performance from a factory knife.
