Sprinkle lime on the leaves of onions for disease prevention and sterilization. from Japan

Onion diseases occur mostly in March, April and May. So now we need sterilization to prevent disease. Many onion diseases are caused by fungi. It is lime that suppresses mold bacteria with alkalinity.

Lime used in fields includes slaked lime, magnesium lime, and organic lime. Slaked lime is a strong alkali and highly effective for sterilization, but it is difficult to adjust the amount used because it is a strong alkali with a pH of 12. Organic lime has a pH of 7 and is easy to use, but its bactericidal effect is weak. Therefore, we recommend Magnesium Lime with a pH of 9. It is also a calcium and magnesium supplement at the same time as sterilization.

The foliar spray of lime is about 50 g per square meter. Use powdered lime. Granular lime has no foliar application effect. The timing of lime spraying is when the morning dew remains or after the rain. You can always do this by moistening the onion leaves with a light sprinkle of water before applying lime. Lime on the stems and leaves prevents the invasion of fungi, and calcium is absorbed from the leaves to strengthen the cell walls.
