The South Busway project included approximately 1.3 miles of concrete pavement crack and seat and new asphalt overlay, new curbs, barrier repairs, drainage updates and updated guiderail and delineators. Also included was the rehabilitation of three Pittsburgh Regional Transit owned bridges, including full superstructure painting of the bridge carrying the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad over the South Busway. ADA access upgrades and repairs to four stations were also completed.

The rehabilitated South Busway will be an asset to the community for many years to come. Ridership benefits include not only a “smooth” ride but four updated bus stations, added wayfinding signage, and improved ADA access. The use of the crack and seat method greatly reduced the construction time needed to restore the pavement and the inconvenience to transit users. The project was completed over two construction seasons with no reduction in service and minimal disruption to the ridership.

The project was recognized by WTS Pittsburgh Chapter with the Innovative Transportation Solution Award in November, 2023.
