AngloGambian singer and musician Sona Jobarteh released her latest album "Badinyaa Kumoo" on September 23, 2022, on the African Guild Records label.
This new opus from Toumani Diabaté's cousin follows in the footsteps of her previous albums, which have a traditionalmodern sound.
For centuries, the kora has been the exclusive instrument of griots, particularly men. Sona Jobarteh, a woman, has made her mark in this very closed circle. She may not be the only woman to play the kora, but she is the only one to perform the traditional griot repertoire on stage.
A virtuoso on the kora, this multiinstrumentalist with a smooth voice takes us on a magnificent journey on this album, combining her rich cultural heritage with a modern, more accessible style. For this album, which has been 11 years in the making, the artist collaborated with (more or less) renowned musicians such as Youssou Ndour, Ballaké Sissoko, Ravid Kahalani, Musa Filly Jobarteh and Kirk Walhum.

La chanteuse et musicienne anglogambienne Sona Jobarteh a publié le 23 septembre 2022 un dernier album intitulé « Badinyaa Kumoo », sorti sous le label African Guild Records.
Ce nouvel opus de la cousine de Toumani Diabaté, s’inscrit dans la lignée de ses précédents albums aux sonorités tradimodernes.
Depuis des siècles, la kora a été l’instrument exclusif des griots, particulièrement des hommes. Sona Jobarteh, une femme, s’est imposée dans ce cercle très fermée. Elle n’est pas certes la seule femme à jouer de la kora, mais elle est la seule à interpréter sur scène le répertoire traditionnel des griots.
Virtuose de la kora, cette multiinstrumentiste à la voix suave nous embarque à travers cet album dans une magnifique mixture entre son riche héritage culturel et un style moderne, plus accessible. Pour la réalisation de cet album attendu depuis 11 ans, l’artiste a collaboré avec des musiciens (plus ou moins) de renom comme Youssou Ndour, Ballaké Sissoko, Ravid Kahalani, Musa Filly Jobarteh ou encore Kirk Walhum.
