Solo Off Grid Cabin Build | From Footings to Roofing | (S:1 EP:03)

Area 601 Outdoors

Back in late 2021 I set out to build a remote off grid cabin in the high desert of New Mexico COMPLETELY ALONE! Building something like this is such a remote part of the country (over 70 miles from the nearest home improvement store) makes things that much more challenging. Follow along with me as I build my dream cabin in just over 10 days!

Thank you all for watching!

In the next episode, I head back to the land of enchantment to install a 1920's vintage wood stove in the cabin!

The Area 601 story
In late 2019 my good friend Max and I decided to start looking into off grid property to purchase. After months of searching we ended up purchasing just under 27 acres in the high dessert of western New Mexico in September of 2020. The only catch, we purchased it off the internet without ever seeing the property in person. In January of 2021, Max and I set out on our maiden voyage to the property or what we decided to call "Area 601" (a reference to the famous and mysterious military base in the USA known as Area 51). Without knowing what to except besides what we saw in a few pictures from the relator, made the entire experience nerve wracking yet EXHILERATING! When we arrived we were blown away by the property, it was an off grid paradise. The land offers some of the most amazing views, perfect for sunsets to the west, and some the darkest of night skies, where just looking up you feel lost in the stars. Aside from the views, the land sits along the NMBDR Route (New Mexico Backcountry Discovery Route), a route designed for adventure bikers following some of the most breathtaking routes from the southern border of New Mexico to the northern border with Colorado! Elk run rampant here, seeing a herd or two each time you go somewhere is pretty common. You will also run into pronghorn, mule deer, and maybe a mountain lion here or there!

The Vision
Once the cabin is finished, I hope to eventually rent out the cabin during certain times of the year (Air B&B). Mainly during hunting season (not as a outfitter), just as a place for folks to stay after their hunts. I also plan on building two or three above ground platforms for folks to camp (focused towards the NMBDR riders passing through the area).
WE ALSO NEED WATER! We knew water was always going to be an issue being the land sits on top a mesa 7,300 ft above sea level with the wells in the area somewhere in the depth of 400ft1,000ft deep!
As time progresses and projects finish up and new ones begin we plan to build multiple structure and buildings on the property. Max and I will eventually both have our own individual cabins, along with a gathering place such as a western themed "saloon" acting more as a public kitchen area.

If you would like to support any part of The VISION we would be greatly appreciative! All donations will go entirely to 'The Vision's" of Area 601!
