Open to people but not cars for a few weeks in the springtime and fall, Snake Road in Southern Illinois is the perfect, simple outdoors trail. It's easy hiking and there are plenty of animals and plants to appreciate along the way. Where is Snake Road? Specifically, the parking lot is in LaruePine Hills and exists as a part of the Shawnee National Forest. (See video or map linked below.)
I found plenty of snakes, salamanders, fishes, and other plants and animals on this relaxing hiking trail. Finding cottonmouth, or the water moccasin, is a really cool experience. There are also an abundance of frogs, like the southern leopard frog and Blanchard's cricket frog.
