Smokies Hikes for Healing

Smokies Life

2020 highlighted the injustices experienced by so many in our nation and left Great Smoky Mountains National Park Superintendent Cassius Cash pondering how he might use his leadership role and his experiences as a Black man and the son of a police officer to benefit the national conversation about race. Cash came up with a plan to use the restorative environs of Great Smoky Mountains National Park as the setting for thoughtprovoking conversations in an open, brave, and curious space. From August to December 2020, Smokies Hikes for Healing brought diverse groups of individuals, who started their hikes as strangers, together on a journey toward healing a divided nation. Superintendent Cash led each hike along with a trained facilitator to spark constructive discussions and help equip participants with the tools and ideas to make unbiased choices and practice antiracism in all aspects of their lives. Through this shared experience, participants created bonds that have extended beyond an individual hike, with the potential to carry these important conversations into their own communities.
