SM Mehdi was a playwright, author, journalist and critic. As a young man he was drawn to the Communist party, and was a student leader in Kanpur and Lucknow. He worked with the Urdu cell of the Communist party in Mumbai with Sajjad Zaheer. He wrote several well received plays and went on to translate dramas into Urdu. He was a scholar who loved to share his knowledge with the many people who came to him seeking help. In later years he wrote TV shows that are still popular, and scripted shows on India's composite culture. He was a devotee of Ghalib and Iqbal. He passed away in Aligarh in January 2015 at the age of 94.

मामूजान, बाबा, सय्यद मोहम्मद मेहदी। उर्दू के अदीब और जर्नलिस्ट। इन्होने स्कूल के ज़माने ही से हिन्दुस्तान की आज़ादी की जद्दोजेहद में हिस्सा लेना शुरू कर दिया थ. भोपाल, कानपूर और लखनऊ में तालीम हासिल करने के बाद एक अखबार में काम करने के लिए 1946 में बम्बई चले गये. यहाँ उनकी मुलाक़ात उन लोगों से हुई जो उर्दू अदब में अपना एक मुक़ाम पैदा कर चुके थे. मसलन, सज्जाद ज़हीर, राजेंद्र सिंह बेदी, किशन चंद, ख़्वाजा अहमद अब्बास, सरदार जाफ़री, इस्मत चुग़ताई, मजरूह, साहिर, कैफ़ी, अख्तरउलईमान, मीराजी, मख़्दूम मोहिउद्दीन। यह सब उनके अज़ीज़ दोस्त थे. कुछ बुज़ुर्ग, जिनसे आखिर तक 'आप' का रिश्ता रहा, और कुछ से 'तुम' का.
