Siaga = ever ready

Programme Note
Singkap Siaga fuses traditional and modern art forms. Inspired by the almostextinct Malaysian tradition of shadow puppet theatre and its music (Wayang Kulit Kelantan), composer Tracy Wong uses 95% vocables and 5% text (Singkap Siaga) to replicate traditional instruments used in Wayang Kulit Kelantan shadow puppet theatre practice with just the human voice.

Tracy writes 'Throughout my research on this tradition, I have been drawn to a scene in a show where the Dewa Panah (two Arrow Gods, one good and one evil) descend from the sky and battle each other. Neither wins. Life goes on in balance.'

Myriad uses light and dance to represent the two Gods and shadow puppetry through video. Special thanks to Tracy and dance choreographer Fairuz Tauhid for educating Myriad about Malaysian vocal and dance styles, as well as sharing the history of Wayang Kulit Kelantan with us.
