On the 15th February 1942, Imperial Japanese forces captured the British stronghold of Singapore. Not only was Singapore Britain's economic base of operations for eastAsia but it was also key to their defensive strategy of the other commonwealth countries in the region. This embarrassing defeat was so surprising that 80,000 troops were taken prisoner.
