The MidAutumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, which usually corresponds to late September or early October in the Gregorian calendar. The festival celebrates three main themes: gathering, where families and friends come together to celebrate and give thanks for the harvest; thanksgiving, a time to express gratitude for blessings and for the harvest; and praying, where some people pray for specific things like babies, a spouse, beauty, or a long life.

The most iconic food of this festival is the mooncake. These are rich pastries filled with various fillings like lotus seed paste, red bean paste, and occasionally, a salted egg yolk to represent the moon. In Chinatowns worldwide, bakeries start selling these cakes well in advance of the festival. Many Chinatowns light up with colorful lanterns. Children might carry lanterns in parades or simply play with them in the streets. Traditional lanterns were often made of paper and lit with candles, but modern versions can be made of plastic and lit with LED lights.

Chinatown areas might host a range of events such as lion and dragon dances, folk performances, lantern riddles, and more. Some places also have parades or other community gatherings. The festival is linked with several myths and legends, the most famous of which is the story of Chang'e, the moon goddess. According to legend, she ascended to the moon after consuming an immortality pill, leaving behind her husband. The sight of the full moon during the festival evokes her story and is a symbol of reunion.

It's a tradition to admire the full moon on this night. Families or friends might gather in a place with a good view, enjoying the moon's beauty and reflecting on its symbolism. While mooncakes are the most wellknown food of the festival, there are other foods associated with it as well, including pomelos, water caltrops, and taro.

In Chinatowns around the world, the MidAutumn Festival is a vibrant, joyous occasion, drawing both locals and tourists. The combination of cultural traditions, delicious food, and colorful displays make it a highlight of the year for many.
