Silverton, Colorado is the county seat of San Juan County, Colorado. Silverton has a population of about 650 people and was founded 1874 with prospectors establishing settlements in the area as early as 1860. Prior to that the land was used by the Anasazi and the Utes, and may have been explored by Spanish expeditions.

The town of Silverton is known for tourism and has captured the imagination of visitors who are interested in the Old West. The entire town of Silverton, CO is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Silverton is at an elevation over 9,000 feet. The 25 mile stretch of Highway 550 that runs between Silverton, Colorado and Ouray, Colorado is named the Million Dollar Highway.
