The Wire is a crime drama series written and conceptualized by David Simon, a former police reporter and author, in partnership with Ed Burns, a former homicide detective. The first episode of the series premiered on HBO on June 2, 2002, and The Wire came to an end after a fiveseasonlong successful run and 60 episodes on March 9, 2008.

Set in Baltimore, Maryland, each episode of the show introduced audiences to the relationship between various institutions of the city and law enforcement. While the cast mostly consisted of relatively unknown faces, many famous Baltimore and Maryland figures were also a part of the series and appeared often in different episodes. Through its run, the critics praised the show for its accurate depiction of city institutions as well as the connection between society and policy. Further, the show has also been regularly applauded for its flawless portrayal of city life. However, even after continuously drawing praises from critics, the show registered average viewers ratings through its run. Further, it never won any major awards. However, after going off the air, the series has become something of a classic and many go to the extent of calling it one of the greatest television shows of all time.
