Sheffield-WOODHEAD-Manchester railway cab ride 1965

This route is now mostly closed, but in 1965 when this journey was made, film was expensive. Using a handheld, clockworkpowered 8mm film camera one generally needed to shoot short shots. This gives ‘pace’ but not nearly enough time to explain all the things viewers may like explained. Perhaps pause to read below:

CoCo = loco has 2 bogies (trucks) each of 3 powered axles. Class EM2, later 77.
BoBo = loco has 2 bogies (trucks) each of 2 powered axles. Class EM1, later 76.
Some of the 1500v DC locos were sold to NS (Dutch Rail) who still use 1500v DC.

Catch Points – Back when most British freight trains only had loco and guard's van brakes, if a coupling broke going upgrade, maybe the van brake didn’t stop the tail end running back. Then spring controlled catch points would derail any runaway, so preventing it colliding with the following train. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catch_p...

Walk/cycle this closed route via TransPennine Trail / Longdendale Trail. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longden...

Mottram Yard – Only partly sorted westbound wagonload traffic. Ceased shunting 1971, totally closed 1980.

CLC – Cheshire Lines Committee owned (pre1923) by Great Central, Great Northern & Midland railway companies. 192347 by LNER & LMS. They extended to Liverpool, Southport & Chester. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheshir...

Class 506 EMU 3car electric multiple units built 1954 for Manchester–Glossop–Hadfield. “Multiple” means 2/more fixed formation units may be coupled & controlled as one. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British...

Gorton Locomotive Works of the Great Central Rly built many steam locos in its 93 productive years up to 1951. Unseen, opposite (on our left) the Works of Beyer, Peacock & Co built locos from 1854 to 1966. Many were exported almost worldwide. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorton_...

Mechanical Coaling Plant of a type seen elsewhere on the network of the former LNER. It stored coal in bulk, to be gravity loaded into steam loco tenders/bunkers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tender_...)

Steam trains were seen by most as oldfashioned, slow and dirty so BR invested strongly in first gen Diesel Multiple Units. In many you could sit at the front and watch the route ahead “over the driver’s shoulder.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British...

Heading towards Stockport are 2 AC locos of different classes. DC & AC systems sidebyside were uncommon. A challenge for the Signal Engineer to immunise his equipment to false operation by either system. High voltage AC electrification uses thinner, less costly, cables and many fewer supply points but needed advances in technology to convert this on the locos/EMUs to suit motors. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electri...

Correction: Stocksfield is STOCKSBRIDGE steel. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stocksb...
