Selective laser melting is a form of metal 3D printing whereby a high power laser selectively melts a region of metal powder. This process is repeated over multiple layers to create complex 3D geometries, not possible with traditional subtractive manufacturing.
Here a Renishaw AM250 is running it's calibration cycle.
