Panel: How can children acquire a language that is not present in their home
Many educators have highlighted that young children who are learning an additional language(s) at an early age develop better listening, multitasking, problemsolving and critical thinking skills compared to their monolingual peers. Children often hear, mimic and practice sounds, words, phrases and sentences from their environment and family. Is this enough to acquire a new language? How can multilingual parents teach their children multiple languages? How can monolingual parents help their child enhance their language skills? What should parents do when their child’s native language differs from the language(s) taught in school? This session will give parents suggestions and practical tips on how to encourage their child to learn a new language.
