Schipperke means “little shepherd” in Flemish and have been used as vermin catchers.
Belgian shepherd and schipperke shared a common ancestor in a little, black sheepdog known as Leuvenaar.
They do well on boats, thus people frequently bring this breed along when they go boating or fishing.
When the boat anchors for the night, the dog makes a good guard dog, alerting of anything out of the ordinary.
Leopold 2’s wife, Queen Marie Henriette, had a crush on these little dogs in 1885.
