SANTA FE: A City That Looks Like Nowhere Else In The USA

Follow
Joe & Nics Road Trip

We spent a day in the capitol city of New Mexico, Santa Fe. While there we visited Loretto Chapel and it's famed staircase. The legend goes like this: When finished, there were no stairs up to the choir loft, since it was common for men to make up the choir and they would use ladders. However, this choir was made up of women (nuns), who because of their dress could not use ladders. So, the nuns prayed to St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters. On the last day of prayer, a mysterious man showed up with a donkey loaded with tools. He agreed to build the staircase but wanted total privacy and would disappear when anyone entered the chapel. Using minimum tools and only wood, the carpenter built this incredible spiral staircase. When the job was complete the nuns tried to pay him, but he was gone. Adding to the mystery, no one ever saw wood delivered to the chapel, and local lumber yards sold no wood to the mystery man. Amazing!

We also visited Santa Fe Square and the Palace Of The Governors, which was built in 1610 and is the oldest continually used building in the United States.
