RV CRACKED GEL COAT—ON THE FRONT CAP: How to fix it 👍

Follow
RVstreet

Today,I’m going to be fixing a couple of growing cracks in the gel coat on the front cap of our RV without using your typical fiberglass kits that use resins and epoxy.

If I was to ask 10 people how they’d go about fixing this problem, I would get 10 different answers. But today I’m going to address this problem my way. My coach my rules right. It’s hot today—about 90º here in RGV—and those are the perfect conditions I’ve been waiting for to tackle this repair.

BACK GROUND:
We were getting ready to leave RGV, I got up on the roof to clean and polish my front cap and that’s when I noticed that the bottom hairline crack that has been there for years has now barely grown some. But now I have another hairline crack growing upwards. Both of these cracks are below and above the far right running light. Now you understand why I take care of my coach myself. If I had some one else washing and polishing my coach, doing roof repairs and so forth, they wouldn’t of even see these cracks and even if they did more than likely they wouldn’t even of said anything. This is why I’m a hands on guy. I’m always looking for stuff like this when I’m working in any area doing anything.

I decided to NOT use your normal fiberglass repair kit where you use fiberglass strips, resin or epoxies because those materials dry to hard and open up additional steps like sanding and painting and stuff like that. Since this is so small, I want to catch it now and avoid that type of extensive fix later. Besides, I just don’t believe that approach is necessary here. These are hairline cracks in the gel coat. Even fiberglass repair kits by JB Weld and others are not the way to go here either. They dry to hard. This motorhome front cap area rolls from side to side, and the cap itself does twist some while underway, so this fix needs to be somewhat flexible, resistant to UV and bond so it won't leak.

The bonding material I used is in my Amazon Store in the "Everything On The Roof" category.
• It does expand a little when drying
• Permanent bonding – above and below the waterline
• Fastcure version of 3M Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200
• Tackfree in 12 hours and typically cures within 48 hours
• Tough and flexible polyurethane polymer forms strong bonds
• Capable of retaining strong bonds during vibration, swelling, shrinking or shock. Stays flexible too allows for structural movement
• Has excellent resistance to weathering and salt water.
• Won't sag or flow in vertical or horizontal seams
• Use when surface is warm
• You can paint over it
• Bonds to fiberglass

So go get your Rv "MARTINIZED". “You guys can do this stuff”.
