Patients are understandably concerned when they suffer a ruptured eardrum (aka hole in eardrum, eardrum perforation) whether from infection or trauma. The good new is that most heal closed within a few weeks as long as any infection has cleared and the ear stays dry! Less commonly, it may take as long as 1 year for the hole to heal closed. Rarely, surgical closure may be required if there is concern the hole will not close and hearing loss and/or recurrent infections are present.
Generative AI was used to create this smooth timelapse of a perforated eardrum healing closed. About 1 day passes every 2.5 seconds.

Easiest way to know if perforated eardrum is healing closed is to have a doctor look in the ear with an otoscope. You can also purchase your own digital otoscope to examine yourself at home as well! https://amzn.to/3NK1Jr8
