Where we began... from basic DIY to self building our house extension and on to a complete renovation of our 1980's bungalow.

This is the story of where we began and the nightmare of cowboy builders going 'bust' and almost ruining us. Followed by others who seemed more interested in milking us for cash until we finally had no money left and it was left to us to give it a go ourselves, and came out of the experience stronger than ever.

The whole process of building the extension was extremely stressful and had my wife in tears on almost a daily basis. Broken promises, demanding money, threats of walking off site and very slow progress was replaced by us taking control of the situation and completing the building work ourselves. It was quite a learning curve to go from DIY to completing the extension ourselves. We knocked down walls, put on the flat EPDM roof covering and did all of the internal remodeling and decorating. On a very tight budget after the original builders had ripped us off and taken over £20,000 for very little to show for it.

When we finally did, we quickly realised how much we could achieve ourselves and were lucky to have some family and friends that were willing and able to help and support us through it.

Ever since this forced us from our comfort zone, I have built up my tools and skills from humble DIY and decorating to now be able to undertake a complete bungalow renovation, including fully building a new extension, a complete new tiled roof, garage rebuild as well as new kitchen, bathroom and much more besides.

So get your tools out and give it a go you never know what you might be able to achieve.
