At Orangutan Jungle School, Beni and Lala are going stir crazy in the sick bay. They’ve been isolated from their classmates so their broken limbs can heal after an accident at forest school and they’re desperately bored. Lala can’t resist the urge to play with all the things she shouldn’t. Beni, however just wants comfort. Veterinarian Arga comes to cheer the invalids up but they still have a few more weeks of recovery before they can return to the rough and tumble of class.
At forest school, groups 3, 4, and 5 combine for class – 25 rambunctious orangutans are quite a handful but there may be a special lesson in store for them. Meanwhile, a termite foraging tutorial leads class clown Valentino to make a fingerlicking discovery, and the Littlies show off their nesting skills.
Yesterday, a convoy carrying seven sun bears, including cubs Denny Bear and India, left from Jungle School, heading to Nyaru Menteng’s sister facility in East Kalimantan: Samboja Lestari. It too is a rescue center that cares for more than 160 orangutans and it will be the sun bear’s new home. Denny Bear and India meet their new dedicated babysitter and have their first of many forest walks to prepare them for release into a larger enclosure, where they’ll live as close to a free life as possible.
In addition to the sun bear sanctuary, Samboja Lestari also has an orangutan jungle school with a nursery and 3 class groups. Life for the group two students is similar to being on one of the prerelease islands near Nyaru Menteng. Instead of formal lessons with babysitters, the teknisi watch over the class while the students explore on their own. That is, except for 12yearold Shelton who is blind and has formed an inseparable friendship with classmate Kopral.
Back at the main compound, a quiet afternoon in the clinic turns hectic when one orangutan needs an emergency operation and another, from Bangamat Island, is struck dangerously ill, resulting in two lives hanging in the balance.
