Respiratory Illness Affecting Dogs In America

A mysterious respiratory illness affecting dogs has appeared in many states, including Oregon, Colorado, Indiana, Illinois, Washington, Idaho, California, and the Northeast. Veterinarians are working to recognize the cause of this possibly fatal condition that has led to the death of some dogs. The illness naturally begins with a persistent cough lasting several weeks. What sets it apart is its battle with regular treatments like antibiotics, leaving dogs under pressure to breathe and raising serious pneumonia. Dr. Lindsey Ganzer, CEO and veterinarian at North Springs Veterinary Referral Center in Colorado Springs, explains the progression as speedy. Dogs can quickly shift from a lasting cough to pneumonia, making the situation dangerous. Since midOctober, Dr. Ganzer's hospital has come across many cases, and the incidence shows no signs of slowing down, with two to three new cases daily, many demanding hospitalization. Unfortunately, four to five dogs treated at the center have died of the illness, often arriving already with respiratory virus with pneumonia. It is important to understand and address this mysterious respiratory illness that is dominant in the veterinary community.
