Replacing VW Tiguan front brake discs and pads

Follow
Andrew Fixes

In this video I change the front brake discs and pads on a 2012 VW Tiguan 2.0 TDi 4Motion. This Tiguan had covered about 85000 miles and there was plenty of life left in the brake pads. Unfortunately the front brake discs had succumbed to the common problem of stuck brake pads, caused by inadequate maintenance, leading to uneven wear and then rust on the brake disc. This leads to reduced braking efficiency. This car was a good example of what commonly happens with brake disc wear, which is that the discs look fine from the outside, but once the wheel is removed and we inspect the back of the discs, it's a different story.

This job involves jacking the car up and securing with axle stands, then removing the wheel. After that, the brake caliper, brake pads and pad carrier are removed, followed by the brake disc. On this car the brake disc was rusted into place on the hub so needed some encouragement to move from a hammer.

After this, I cleaned up the hub, brake pad sliding surfaces and caliper slider pins. Next I sucked some brake fluid out of the reservoir, then retracted the brake caliper piston. The final steps were to install new Textar brake pads and discs, using Febi Bilstein ceramic brake pad paste.
