With its many advantages, the Smart IMS is being adopted by more and more fleets. You’ll find that many of the steps are like any IMS replacement. However, with a Smart IMS, there is an additional lead to be terminated to the motor terminal. In this video, we show you how to install the Smart IMS. http://delcoremy.com'>http://delcoremy.com'>http://delcoremy.com'>http://delcoremy.com Delco Remy Genuine starters and alternators from BorgWarner are the preferred choice for medium and heavyduty truck, bus and offhighway applications worldwide. Before you begin, remember to follow all safety measures. You can find these in the detailed instruction sheet that was included in the replacement kit. Keep this sheet handy at all times—you’ll refer to it throughout the replacement process. Many of the steps are similar to any IMS replacement. However, with a Smart IMS, there is an additional lead to be terminated to the motor terminal. The first step is to disconnect the batteries from the vehicle to make it safe. Then you can remove the starter from the engine. Once you have the unit off the engine, your next step is to remove the IMS leads from the motor terminals and then the IMS from the motor. Be sure to keep all fasteners for reuse. Then, remove the solenoid motor terminal nut, and clean all connections for reassembly. Refer to the instruction sheet when you begin reassembling the motor. It lists the required torque that should be applied for each fastener by product family. You’ll also find the location of each lead and fastener outlined on the instruction sheet. Now you’re ready to install the Smart IMS. • Begin by mounting the ground lead, if required, between the IMS mounting and solenoid ground terminal. If the old IMS was grounded internally, there is no need to use the included ground lead. • Next, mount the Smart IMS onto the motor. • Attach the Smart IMS motor terminal lead to the solenoid motor terminal. The lead is a small diameter wire with large ring terminal. • Now, attach the Smart IMS battery terminal lead with a red insulator to the solenoid battery terminal. Keep finger tight until mounting on the engine. • Then, attach the Smart IMS switch terminal lead to the solenoid switch terminal. You can identify this lead by its small ring terminal. The instruction sheet outlines additional variations possible for motors equipped with Over Crank Protection, or OCP. In these cases, the OCP connector is not used since the function is integrated into the Smart IMS as a feature. We’re almost done. • Now secure all leads to the solenoid with the provided zip ties. Make sure all fasteners are properly torqued as well. • Finally, reinstall the starter per manufacturer’s instructions and reconnect the batteries. To remain safe, you must: Know where the nearest eye wash station is located Always wear eye protection Remove any metallic items that could create an electrical charge including watches and jewelry Never smoke near batteries Never use batteries as a tool rest Dispose of batteries properly when necessary Follow usual safety precautions near rotating machinery
